Gae Aulenti, Spazio Oberdan, Piazza Oberdan, Viale Vittorio Veneto 2, Milan, Italy, 1997-1999
Spazio Oberdan is a space dedicated to culture. It was created by the Culture Department of the province Milan. The building is located in the Porta Venezia area, near Piazza Oberdan Viale Vittorio Veneto. On the ground floor there is a small bookshop, an information center and a library with attached ticket office. On the first floor there is an exhibition space for temporary exhibitions and on the second floor you can find the administration offices. The original residential building was built in the end of the nineteenth century. The area was transformed in 1920 by creating inside it a cinema. In 1950, a structural defect and a structural consolidation was carried out by inserting 8 pillars to support the structure. This space, just like all of Aulenti’s other works, arises from a visceral relationship with the context. It seems like it was directly generated by it.
