Johannes Hendrik van den Broek, House in Rotterdam, Rotterdam, 1954

Johannes Hendrik van den Broek born 4.10.1898, Rotterdam, Netherlands and died 6.09.1978, The Hague. He graduated from Delft Technical University in 1924 and 3 years later he began his architectural practice. From 1927 to 1937 he worked as an independent architect in Rotterdam. During this period he realised his first building, the housing complex “De Eendracht”. In 1937 he enter the practice Architectenbureau Brinkman en Van der Vlugt which later became Brinkman en Van den Broek.

After the bombing of Rotterdam, Van den Broek becomes an avid participant in the debate surrounding post-war reconstruction in the Netherlands. He is advisor to the Adviesbureau Stadsplan Rotterdam (1943) and member of Opbouw Rotterdam, of the preparatory committee of the Bouwcentrum (1944) and of the Kerngroep van de Studiegroep Woningarchitecture (1945-1954). In conjunction with Van Tijen, Brinkman and Maaskant he publishes the survey ‘Woonmogelijkheden in het Nieuwe Rotterdam’ (1941) on new approaches to building in Rotterdam.
